According to the Department of Agricultural Product Processing and Market Development (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), the export value of fruits and vegetables in May 2019 is estimated at 424 million USD, bringing the export value of fruits and vegetables in the first 5 months of 2019 to an estimated 1.83 billion USD. Markets with a sharp increase in fruit and vegetable export value are Australia, up 39.9%; Netherlands increased by 29.22%; South Korea increased by 25.53% and France increased by 24.81%.
The estimated import value of vegetables and fruits in May 2019 reached 228 million USD, bringing the total value of imported vegetables and fruits in the first 5 months of 2019 to 878 million USD, an increase of 46% over the same period in 2018.
The Department of Agricultural Product Processing and Market Development said that at the end of April 2019, China licensed the import of Vietnamese mangosteen, this is the 9th fruit officially exported to this market (after dragon fruit, lychee, watermelon, longan, banana, mango, jackfruit, rambutan).
According to forecasts, in 2019 the Chinese market will import fruit with a value exceeding 10 billion USD. In the first 4 months of this year alone, the import value of fruits and vegetables in the Chinese market increased to 3.1 billion USD, exceeding 26% over the same period last year; Of which the fastest increase is mangosteen (up 600%).
The agricultural industry’s goal set in 2019 is to reach 4.2 billion USD and Vietnamese businesses are actively expanding exports to new, difficult but potential markets such as the US and Europe.
In 2018, Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable export turnover to the US reached 123 million USD. The total output of fresh fruit exported to the US that must be irradiated reached nearly 7,500 tons of all kinds, an increase of 75 times compared to 2008. It is likely that the turnover will grow strongly in 2019, because recently Vietnamese businesses has officially exported fresh mangoes to the US (after dragon fruit, rambutan, longan, lychee, star apple). The two sides are continuing to negotiate for the US to open more doors for grapefruit from Vietnam.
After the US market, Europe is a potential fruit and vegetable export market. This is also the world’s largest frozen fruit and vegetable import market, accounting for nearly 50% of the total global frozen fruit and vegetable import turnover.
